THORNLESS VARIETIES: Navaho, Arapaho, Apache, Ouachita
Navaho-Pat.#6679:
Released from University of Arkansas in 1988.
Ripens about one week later than Shawnee, and about 15 days after Cheyenne. It is thornless, erect, self-supporting, with sweeter tasting berries than other thornless varieties. Size is comparable only to Cheyenne. Emergence of plants from root cuttings is only 65%, therefore, a closer spacing of root cuttings is necessary. Berries are conic in shape bright glossy black. Fruit is firmer than other thorny varieties, and seed size is smaller than other thornless types. Patented.
Arapaho-Pat.#8510:
An early ripening, erect, thornless blackberry that quickly establishes full fruiting row. Fruit is short, conic shaped and bright black in color. Fruit is firm, similar to Navaho and more firm than Shawnee and Choctaw. Flavor is similar to Navaho. Seed size is small. Ripens about eleven days earlier than Navaho, and two days before Shawnee. Fruiting period is less than four weeks. Plants are moderately vigorous and very erect.
Apache-Pat.#11865:
Apache produced yields higher than or similar to Arapaho and Navaho. It is larger than either Arapaho or Navaho, usually twice as large as Navaho, and 80% larger than Arapaho. First harvest date for Apache averages 15 days later than Arapaho. Fruit firmness was rated lower for Apache compared to Navaho but comparable to Arapaho. Flavor of Apache was rated very good. Apache is more erect than either of the comparative thornless erect cultivars. Outstanding characteristics of Apache include large fruit, good yields, good fruit quality and thornless vigorous, healthy erect plants.
Ouachita-Pat. Pending:
The fourth thornless released by the U of A.; very productive, sweet and medium sized. Ripens between Arapaho and Navaho. Resistant to double blossom, very erect with berry size larger than Navaho, but smaller than Apache. Fruit storage and handling very good - similar to Navaho.

Thorny Varieties: Kiowa, Chickasaw
Kiowa-Pat.#9861:
Erect, thorny blackberry. Fruit are blocky and have an attractive glossy black finish. Produces large fruit (30% heavier than Shawnee) over a period of six weeks. Fruit is firmer than Shawnee and has a longer storage life. Fruiting row establishment is good using either plants or root cuttings.
Chickasaw-Pat. Pending:
Chickasaw produces larger fruit, has comparable to higher yields, and has improved postharvest handling characteristics compared to Shawnee with a similar season of ripening.
Chickasaw has excellent flower and fruit fertility and full drupelet set. Chickasaw blooms 1 to 3 days later than Choctaw and on average 4 days before Shawnee. First harvest date for Chickasaw averaged 3 days later than Shawnee and Kiowa. Fruit of Chickasaw are long, cylindrical and slightly flattened in shape and very attractive with a glossy, black finish. Fruit firmness was higher for Chickasaw than Shawnee or Choctaw but comparable to Kiowa. Flavor of Chickasaw was rated higher than Kiowa and Shawnee. Canes of Chickasaw are thorny and have a thorn density similar to Shawnee but less than that of Kiowa. It is more erect than Kiowa and slightly less erect than Shawnee. Outstanding characteristics of Chickasaw include large fruit, high yields, good fruit quality, improved post harvest performance over Shawnee, and vigorous, healthy, erect plants.
